MAXIMUM RABBIT - V/A (Canada)

MAXIMUM RABBIT - The Second FacePlant Compilation Tape
-CS
1996 (FacePlant Productions)

For a brief period (1995-1998), Vancouver's FacePlant rehearsal studio inflated into a full-blown music/arts collective. Taking its cue from New York's legendary ROIR label, the zany bunch created their own cassette label, producing 19 full-length releases from local bands that practised at FacePlant, along with one-of-a-kind live concerts, guerilla theatre, even a retail outlet that would seemingly materialize out of nowhere and vanish again leaving no visible trace.

FACEPLANT IN A NUTSHELL:

As the collective grew, so did their capabilities, including videos and animation, and pioneering revolutionary methods of streaming video content that was actually *watchable* during the days of dialup 'Net access.

The entire tape catalog is SOLD OUT and no longer in print, and these days FacePlant has returned to its roots as a jam space.

LAST CALL (Canada) - V/A

LAST CALL - Vancouver Independent Music 1977-1988
- 2CD
1991 (Zulu)

Re-Up!

"Many Canadian music fans would argue that during the punk and new wave eras, Vancouver was the home of the best Canadian bands, and the compilation Last Call provides pretty compelling evidence.

Early tracks from the punk school, including the bands D.O.A. and the Subhumans are included, as well as new wave acts like the Modernettes. Disc two leans more towards the "alternative" era, which still featured punk-oriented acts like Nomeansno (who were technically from Victoria, but it's close enough for punk) and Slow, but also included more pop fare in the form of bands like Oversoul Seven. These aren't the only touch points, however, with forays into hardcore, folk, surf, and more.

A few things are of particular note on this compilation: first, the inclusion of an early track by 54.40, who would go on to become one of Canada's most enduring pop acts. Secondly, a mini-Art Bergmann overview, featuring his early work with the bands Young Canadians (who do the classic "Hawaii"), Los Popularos, and Poisoned, who went on to be his backup band when he started performing under his own name.

There are also a number of performers here who would go on to other things: David Wisdom of U-J3RK5 would later become a late-night host on the CBC, and Bob Rock, who produced many of these early punk classics later became a big-name heavy metal producer for acts like Van Halen and Metallica. Though some of the tracks are more forgettable than others, there are enough lost classics here (Slow being the most notable) to make the album a must-have for anyone who lived through this era, even if you were from Toronto at the time." - by Sean Carruthers, allmusic

Skookum Chief Powered TEENAGE ZIT ROCK ANGST (Canada) - V/A

Skookum Chief Powered TEENAGE ZIT ROCK ANGST
-LP (w/ free CD version)
1995 (Nardwuar Records)

Re-Up!

"'Way-north-o-the-border, Nardwuar "The Human Serviette" is well known and , uhh, loved for his acutely Canadian brand of ambush journalism (conjure, if you care, Howard Stern Meets Martin Short). But out here in the civilized world, Nardwuar runs a few bands along with his own label, the latter of who've just released The Compilation Album Of The Decade So Far. Besides a real beauty assortment of garagecore and hardpop, you'll particularly dig the alternative lounge stylings of Harvey Sid Fisher, not to mention Jersey's always beatful Sit'n'Spin. And if you order today, your "SCPTZRA" LP will have a FREE CD enclosed, whereupon you can hear the Human Serviette's very own Goblins combo terrorize a local radio station for 29min 20sec." - Gary The Pig

"Nardwuar the Human Serviette has got that geek mojo working. It's all in that special voice. Gilligan meets nitrous oxide. When he ups the pitch, when he's on, ambush-interviewing a Mikhail Gorbachev or a Mickey Dolenz, he tends to get the goods.

For years Nardwuar has hosted a radio show on CITR 101.9 FM. It's a low-watt campus affair broadcasting from UBC. The affiliation has afforded him access to most anybody willing to play along with media...

When he hooks them, Nardwuar latches right into the flesh. No pat question. He knows his subjects. The arcane details, the very stuff of self-referential pop kultcha he lugs around crammed inside of his head, draw the celebs out, ready or not.

Another good thing about the mischief-maker is the fact that he happens to be a shameless promoter of place. The suffix "Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada" is stuck all over the merchandise -- like the album covers for the vinyl records with the free CDs he puts out on his own label. The skewed vagaries of this great country show up in the odd songs covered by his band or included in a compilation album like 1995's Skookum Chief-Powered (note local eatery reference imbedded in title) Teenage Zit Rock Angst. There you will hear among the not two, 12 or 26, but 19 of the best bands in the world..."

COLOR ME PSYCHO (Canada)

Kiss Me, Then ... Color Me Psycho
w/ Pretend I'm Your Father
-CS
1986 (Old Shep)

Re-Up!

"Trash. There I said it. It’s one of the essential ingredients in Horror punk. Trash, like the New York Dolls sang about, Trash in the way the Cramps would shout it, and Trash in that overdriven attitude of teen energy that all us old bastards only wish we could recapture. I have news for you kids, youth is wasted on the young. Speaking of young trash, one Alistair Hexx, before he changed his name to Jackson Phibes was a purveyor of near perfect trash when he fronted the band Color Me Psycho, which last I heard he liked to call Color Me Sucko. Calgary Canada’s great fuzz and organ driven garage rock revivalist who while never overtly horror playing the Psychotronic playground of genre fair, bashing out tunes about sex, and weird gods, deadly cars and fear." - Iren

"Since starting out in the primordial-ooze of the Calgary-based garbagy/garagy Color Me Psycho, entertainer Jackson Phibes has been dishing out macabre-tinged rockin' slop to disbelieving audiences for over 13 years. CMP managed to stay together for 3 years of tyranny and stagnation, releasing a few tapes and one full-length piece o' vinyl (the now collector's item "Pretend I'm your Father" album).

Immediately following the demise of his first ill-fated stab at the small-time, Phibes (who was still toiling under the dubious nom de axe, Aleister Hexxx) set about initiating a head-long dive into the horror-rock ghettos with the Forbidden Dimension." - Sidetrack Cafe

The MYSTIC EYES (USA)

SONGS ABOUT TUGBOATS
-CS
199? (bootleg)

"Bernie Kugel wrote some of the catchiest, most memorable garage tunes of the 1980s. His ability to mix the jangle of the Byrds with the snot of the Seeds was unparalleled in the genre, and his band, The Mystic Eyes, was the lucky recipient of his talent...

Kugel really can't sing, so this is why The Mystic Eyes were sure to remain firmly planted in the garage tradition. In more delicate hands, some of the Mystic Eyes love songs would be reduced to standard pop. Under Kugel's direction, however, even the most gentle of love songs retains that certain garage-rock edge." - Timothy Gassen

" I think I was still at the University of Rochester when I first heard Mystic Eyes, though I can't remember if it was via a recording or a live show they did in Buffalo with the Chesterfield Kings. I do remember my reaction to their first 45, "My Time To Leave"/"From Above" (Get Hip GH-102). The A-side original was nothing short of amazing. An Acetone organ-colored anthem, "My Time To Leave" took its place in the BlairBoard Top 10, spending quite a few weeks at #1. (Indeed, it holds an honored place in the hallowed halls of the music museum of my mind.) Underneath, there was the genius cover of "From Above," which I'd first heard done by The Telltale Hearts." - Blair

"In 1983, Bernie Kugel decided to record a song for possible inclusion on VOXX RECORDS' Battle of the Garages (Volume Two) compilation LP of modern-days garage bands. The only problem was that, having dissolved his college band, The Good, Bernie was without an actual garage band. This was of little concern, as Bernie corraled drummer and record producer, Mike Brydalski, to perform both tasks. Bernie played guitar, bass and sang on an updated cover of THE STOICS' "Enough of What I Need" and sent the finished master to Greg Shaw at VOXX.

A short time later, Bernie asked his pal, Mad Louie, what he thought a good name for a garage band would be. "I've always thought Mystic Eyes would make a great band name," the Mad One replied.

"Then Mystic Eyes it shall be!" belched Bernie in between swigs of Pepsi.

Sure enough, the track made the cut for the album! Bernie cobbled together a ficticious band bio for the LP liner notes and then set about beating the bush for like-minded garage-mates.

In December, Bernie got so drunk at his sister-in-law's wedding reception that he invited Craig Davison to join his new band. They exchanged phone numbers just as 1983 came to a close." - Craig P. Davison

GARAGE SALE! (USA) - V/A

GOLDMINE PRESENTS
"GARAGE SALE"
-CS
1985 (ROIR)

Re-Up!

"Strictly speaking, there have been garage bands as long as there have been garages and rock music. But in today's rock parlance, the term refers specifically to the American suburban bands that sprang up in the mid-60's in the wake of the British invasion. Another word that was originally used to refer to these bands was ''punk,'' and by the late 60's such bands were also being called ''psychedelic,'' but the phenomenon remained the same - bands that were loud and obnoxiously bratty, banging out rhythm-and-blues and assorted pop trash in a style much influenced by the early Rolling Stones.

With the coming of the late 60's, ''rock poetry,'' and the self-conscious art-rock inspired by the Beatles' ''Sgt. Pepper'' album, garage-rock went underground. The term ''garage band'' took on derogatory connotations; it was what you called a semi- amateur band that ineptly played renditions of better bands' hits. But of course garage bands endured. Iggy and the Stooges, the late 60's band that was an important forerunner of punk rock as we now know it, was a classic garage band. And with the coming of the new punk sensibility to New York and London in the late 70's, garage-type bands like the Ramones and the Heartbreakers suddenly found themselves on the cutting edge of a new wave subculture.

In today's rock, the garage is a state of mind. Some of the bands heard on the ROIR ''Garage Sale'' sampler are suburban bands, but others are inner-city bands for whom the garage designation is a matter of influences and style. New York City's Vipers, for example, write and play contemporary pop-rock songs with stylistic roots in the mid-60's on their own first album, ''Outta the Nest'' (PVC/Jem). They also share with the Mosquitos (and many other contemporary bands) an abiding interest in pioneering 60's psychedelic bands like the 13th Floor Elevators. The ROIR cassette indicates that the present garage-band scene is really a spectrum of styles.

Above all, garage-rock is a do-it- yourself esthetic. So you want to be a rock-and-roll star? If you can make enough noise to drive your family to distraction and rattle your neighbors' windows, you're on the way. "

The GRUESOMES (Canada)

GRUESOMANIA
- LP
1987 (Og! Records)

Re-Up!

"Gruesomania. It started in a basement. It spread to the small clubs. It conquered Canada. Now it's threatening the world...You too can get infected with Gruesomania. The only needle you need is the one on your record player. So what are you waiting for? Slap on the platter, kick out mom and dad, and crank it up!" - liner notes

"SUMMER 1987… Downtown in Montreal, Canada. It’s towards the end of a great holiday, visiting my sister and her husband.
I’m standing in a record store called Cheap Thrills, having decided to buy a Canadian LP as a souvenir of my stay. In the ‘local music’ section a sleeve catches my eye: four guys with bowl haircuts, fringes almost down to their noses, standing outside an American gothic house that could have come straight off an Addams Family set. The Gruesomes. I ask the assistant, ‘Who are these guys?’ He tries to sell me a Canadian country-pop LP, dismissing The Gruesomes as, ‘Okay, but kinda pointy boots, sixties...’ I ignore him and buy the LP anyway, having been convinced by the sleeve notes (by Fuad Rainses) which promise ‘...primitive raunch, maracca- shakin’ rave-ups, harp wailin’ R&B and other teenage sounds...’

I return home. All the way from Heathrow the rain is pouring, as it should when you come back to England. I put the record on as I unpack...I am hooked forever. The sound is like The Pretty ‘Things and The Downliners Sect, but, if anything, louder and cruder. I have discovered 1980s garage punk...

The Gruesomes sound developed, but always remained true to
the same crude snotty garage R&B. Like The Tell-Tale Hearts, they
always sounded as if they had more in common with the wilder
British R&B merchants than the more American Nuggets/Pebbles
bands. They also had a fondness for covers of obscure ’60s
Quebecois R&B sung in French." - Phil Suggitt

"Montreal quartet who specialized, originally in '60's garage style cover tunes with an affinity for punk formed in 1985. With all the members between the ages of 16 and 19, they derived their influences from bad TV and listening to obscure mid-60's record. The band took its name from an episode of The Flintstones.

After garnering attention with two EPs on Primitive Records in 1985, and less than a year after picking up musical instruments for the first time, they released their debut album, 'Tyrants Of Teen Trash', in 1986 for Og Music.

The album sold well in Europe and North America and frequently landed at the No.1 position on many alternative playlists across Canada.

Their following grew which led to back-to-back LP releases of 'Gruesomania' (1987) and 'Hey!' (1988) making them one of Canada's biggest selling underground acts.

However, the extreme pressures of touring and recording finally took their toll on the band and they broke up at the height of their popularity in 1990." - Wes Doerksen and Patrick LeBoutillier

THEY CAME FROM THE NORTH (Sweden) - V/A

THEY CAME FROM THE NORTH
-cd
2003 (Zorch)

Re-Up!

"This comp is a pretty solid document of today's Scandinavian garagerock scene, mostly 'pure' 60s fuzz style r'n'r and r&b/garagepunk since Zorch wanted to show what the scene has evolved into after the 80s garagerock reign of bands like Nomads and Stomachmouths. There's known bands like Sweatmaster, Baby Woodrose, Flaming Sideburns, The Maggots, The Chronics and The Strollers but also great tunes by bands I'm not that familiar with like Maharajahs, Voladoras, The Satans, Glendoras and The Skreppers (The Seeds meets Dead Kennedys!?). Lotsa other names could easily have been included on this CD, I mostly miss The Defectors, but that's Zorch Productions' choice and a minor complaint on my behalf since there's not a weak track on "They Came From The North". More unreleased and rare tunes could've been included though. Zorch, why not make this into a series of comps? In 20 years those could be the Scandinavian "Nuggets" albums." - Jens, LowCut Magazine

The HISTORY OF VANCOUVER ROCK AND ROLL Vol.4 (Canada) - V/A

THE HISTORY OF VANCOUVER ROCK AND ROLL Vol.4
-LP/CD
1991 (Vancouver Record Collectors Association)

"If ever there was any doubt that Vancouver's '60s bands were the creative equals of their American counterparts, this CD should settle that issue forever. From raw punk and blue-eyed soul, to folk-rock and sublime psychedelia, all bases are covered. Highlights include Mock Duck (a silkier and more sophisticated Iron Butterfly), the Northwest Company (whose fiery guitar bursts strafed the musical landscape with Kinks-like intensity) and William Tell & the Marksmen (surely on anyone's short-list of great undiscovereds).

Mock Duck's "Do Re Mi" is a stunning original which richly deserved, like many tunes here, U.S. exposure that it never received. With its dark, time-shifting melody and ethereal organ, it had all the makings of an international hit. So did "Mary Jane" by William Tell & the Marksmen -- a finer slice of psychedelia you'd be hard pressed to find. "Hard to Cry" perfectly embodies the Northwest Company's rhythm blitzkrieg approach (circa 1967) and stands proudly beside any Yank or Brit garage punk of that era. West Coast guitar stylings à la Moby Grape or Spirit are suggested by Long Time Comin's "Paper Rose." "My New Love," by the Eternal Triangle, seems a hybrid of "Put the Clock Back on the Wall," by the E-Types, and We Five's "You Were on My Mind." English-flavored bubblegum best describes "In a Whirl" by the Look. The Collectors' "Eyes" gets a thumbs-up as a catchy folk sing-along.

Neither the Shockers nor the Silver Chalice Revue particularly impressed this reviewer, but that's a matter of taste. And while the One Way Street's offerings are middlingly strong psychedelia, the fact that their tunes mistakenly appeared on Louisiana Punk, Vol. 2 (Eva) merely confirms the obvious -- they sounded just like everybody else. Spring's "A Country Boy Named Willy" is unmistakably an early '70s tune -- it just has that countryfied-boogie feel. If you're looking for variety in your pop-music diet, you can't ask for much more than this compilation serves up. Check it out. It's definitely worth a listen." - Stansted Montfichet

The FLAMENCO A GO GO (Japan)

THE FLAMENCO A GO GO
- CD
1993 (Cranky Disc/Wonder Release Records)

Re-Up!

"The Flamenco A Go Go were a legendary, but short-lived, trashy garage rock band from Japan. Three girls & one guy on drums. Some really funny lyrics - probably unintentional! Check out the song titles like "Make Me Stinked." Singer and guitar player later went on to form Hawaiian influenced Petty Booka." - S. Pross "iamarobot"

"A good, fun, rockin’ band. Ryosuke Izuhara wrote the songs. They’re sung in English; they’re adventurous; they’re pleasingly clever; and they couldn’t be pretentious if they tried. Their first CD’s production is wanting, but the songs are so strong, I recommend everything this band did. Between this and Fully Fed Freaks (their 2nd CD), I like these songs better, and the less raucous nature of the band here presents them as a celebration of adolescent fun! They’ve left us something well worth remembering." -Rock of Japan
